Vineyards

Vineyards at Chateau Saint-Pierre are at the core of its existence and represent great pride for its owners. Careful attention is taken in harvesting each grape with care, monitoring soils to enhance wine production quality and producing wines with unique and memorable characteristics.

Barde-Haut, Clos l'Eglise and Poesia are located within Saint-Emilion and Pomerol appellations respectively. Helene oversees both Saint-Emilion estates owned by her parents; Tim oversees Poesia which they purchased ten years ago. Their choice of name, which refers to medieval poetry delivered by wandering troubadors through church services as inspired by Helene's time spent traveling through Argentina where she first visited vineyards with Tim.

As we looked out across the misty acres of vines at Chateau Barde-Haut, Helene gave a sigh of relaxation as we gazed upon its vineyards. "It is essential to understand a vineyard," she stated firmly, as small producers often have difficulty operating successfully within this complex business model; an unexpected bad harvest can put vineyards close to bankruptcy while taxes come from both land values as well as wine sales revenues.

At our visit, we sampled freshly fermented juice before taking a tour around the property. The grounds include an impressive French garden of yew hedge topiary, pool and tennis court as well as 2 hectares of managed gardens - in total there are five one-bedroom holiday rental apartments including four located within restored mill and one nearer the main building reminiscent of fairy tale forges.

Winemaking

Christian and Mathieu cultivate Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah grapevines on their prestigious location 'La Barde', maturing them for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels sourced both new and secondhand.

Poesia, their flagship wine, is an elegant Chardonnay produced from 90 year-old vines planted on shallow red clay with "eboulis calcaires", in Maynal (think Domaine Labet). Fermented and aged for 228ltr barrels before having its moreish texture perfectly balanced by subtle minerals.

This property is an exquisite 14th Century building adorned with charming 14th Century elements like yew hedge topiary, secular trees, tennis court and swimming pool - all set within 2 hectares of manicured gardens as well as wild meadow fields. There are also two apartments on-site located within former walnut mill and fairy tale-esque forge buildings which can all be reached directly from the main building.
